Riassunto
This is a self-contained study book which aims to lead the student through the close study of the wealth of poetry inspired by war throughout history. Structured reading, writing, speaking and listening activities explore the wider moral and social issues of war, and detailed analysis of language and poetic techniques prepare students for examination work. Poets studied include Byron, Thomas Hardy, Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen and Kipling, and extracts from biographies and photographic material set the poems in context. The book can be used alone or alongside the "Hodder English 4" course book, and offers comprehensive coverage of National Curriculum requirements for the study of literary texts at Key Stage 4. Activities and stimuli in the text help to generate written coursework for GCSE English.
Recensione
...they are beautifully produced: sturdily made, finely printed and illustrated, with clear, inviting and highly practical layout. There is an editorial team behind them with a track record known to many teachers, inspiring confidence and producing consistency. There is care not just for the integrity of the text being studied, but for the methodology used. Pupils respond to the texts with reading, writing, speaking and listening: the indivisibility of English as a subject is never lost sight of. But what makes the books most rworth having is the understanding of the texts themselves: not only in their historical and social contexts, but also as aesthetic objects obeying laws and structures of their own. I recommend them strongly. (Times Educational Supplement)
The guides are designed to develop skills of analysis and planning and organising written responses, but sugar the pill with refreshingly imaginative, fun activities such as role-play...The text is colourful and eye-catching, with attractive illustrations...The language is straightforward and accessible to students of all abilities.
