Recensione
OBSERVER
'Short breathes new life into the argument about whether the Iraq war was legal . . . Some of the details of Blair's egoism are stunning . . . [An Honourable Deception?] is well-written and offers a disturbing insight into a government where Blair seems to take every decision, not just about war, on the basis of poor information and without consultation'
Michael Portillo, SUNDAY TIMES
'Gruesome reading . . . the picture she builds of Blair is horrifying but fascinating . . . Anyone interested in our country's welfare, in the strange, driven man we have as Prime Minister, and in how he will continue to cling to power, should curl up with this book and a box of tissues, and weep' EDWINA CURRIE, EVENING STANDARD
'Impressive . . . intriguing titbits . . . an important account of one minister's increasing despair at the deafness of Blair to argument. It's description of the drift to war is shocking and one leaves Miss Short's company with a sense of despair' Quentin Letts, DAILY MAIL
'This is a compelling, polemical memoir, a personal narrative wrapped around a broader story of modern British politics -- a tale of decency, naivety and duplicity in which spin overwhelms substance . . . this is not a self-serving book. In new Labour's world of spin and blandness, Clare Short is a breath of air. This straight-forward account reminds us why' Philippe Sands, NEW STATESMAN
'It is a funny thing to write about a politician, but you could read the early part of Clare Short's memoir, An Honourable Deception? without realising how important a figure she was in the Labour Party, before Tony Blair took control. ' Andy McSmith, INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY
'Honest and open . . . Her diary entries . . . form the best part of the book. There is an immediacy about them, the views not influenced by hindsight . . . Her public opposition to the war angered colleagues, who accused her of being sanctimonious and undisciplined. But she was saying in public and to Blair what many of them thought privately but were not prepared to say, either publicly or to Blair'
Ewen MacAskill, GUARDIAN
'Her insight into the creeping megalomania of Blair and his entourage is acute . . . In [Short's] diagnosis of our current political malaise, she has finally got it right'
Helen Chappell, Tribune
'It was good to see [Clare Short's] book selected as the best in the year in Channel 4's political awards. . . all the explanations she offers now add to the strength of her indictment. Her performance as a minister was outstanding in every way' Michael Foot, TRIBUNE
'A bitterly revealing expose from one of the rare politicians ever to make good on a belief in politics as "a moral calling"'
Independent 30/9
'The book adds sizeable weight to the increasingly clamorous anti-Blairism. But what makes it particularly signigicant and compelling is its impassioned account of a coterie of right-wingers at the heart of New Labour, who with their short-term, top-down solutions, have butchered the party, alienated swathes of the electorate and increased global instability'
Guardian 8/10
'Short's book is important and revealing'
Sunday Times 30/10
