This book is designed for students in 4th to 5th grade (ages 9-11), but word problems are particularly difficult to assign a grade level to. Word problems require both math and reading skills to complete. Even students in 6th grade or higher may find this book challenging. Word problems require higher level thinking skills. Students may know how to multiply and divide, but do they know how to use these skills in real-life settings? Being able to read a math problem and decide if it requires multiplication or division is one skill. Being able to multiply and divide are different skills. All these skills are needed to correctly answer word problems.
Like them or not, standardized tests are a major component of modern educational systems. These tests often use word problems to assess math skills. Problems of pure arithmetic are increasingly rare. Help familiarize your student with these question types now.
