Every archive is a graveyard: it buries not only the books, but those who buried them. With this haunting image Hüseyin Doğan opens a daring inquiry into the deepest layers of Islam's origins - a christological rereading that follows a single, unsettling thread: the rock.
"Islam Born of the Rock" reads the Qur'ān against the grain of the familiar narrative. From Mithras, the god born of the rock, to Hagar, the stone abandoned in the desert; from the Black Stone as cornerstone to Kefas, the rock on which the Church was built - Doğan uncovers a vast web of correspondences in which stone is never merely stone. It is birth, sacrifice, covenant and threshold; the buried memory of one tradition surfacing in the ritual of another.
At the heart of the book lies a startling thesis about the Kaʿba itself. Drawing on archaeology, early inscriptions and the testimony of the sources, Doğan traces its possible transformation from a church into the House of God: the apse and the altar, the Byzantine building materials of the 605 CE reconstruction, the frescoes and the "Door of Repentance," the Ḥijr Ismāʿīl as the remnant of a church apse, Jerusalem as the first qibla and the prayer once performed toward the apse. Abraha's Yemeni Kaʿba and its challenge to Mecca, the rivalry of more than one sanctuary, the curse of Abū Righāl and the origins of the stoning of the Devil - all are read as strata of a single, contested history.
From here the inquiry widens into a sweeping comparative study. Doğan examines the saint-cult and the icon tradition, the belief in intercession and the Qur'ānic meaning of shirk; the symbolism of the letter Nūn and the fish, carried from early Christianity into Islam; the journey of the crescent and the star from Byzantium; the strange afterlife of these symbols in folk belief - the evil-eye bead, the horseshoe, the healing ritual. He reads Jonah as the weary and rebellious prophet, and dares to connect his story with the figure of Paul.
Yet the book never loses its footing in the sources. Every claim is anchored in a close reading of the Qur'ānic wording, in the etymology of the Semitic languages, and in the history of exegesis - from al-Ṭabarī to modern scholarship. The story of Moses and the twelve springs, the parable of the Two Gardens, the command to "strike with a part of the cow," the Companions of the Cave awakening from a 309-year sleep: always the question is how meaning is transformed as it passes from one tradition to the next, and what is remembered when the words have changed.
Doğan writes neither an apologetic nor a polemical book. He passes no judgement upon faith, yet he refuses to let the stones keep their silence. His style is at once literary and exact - a thought that places the trace above the dogma, the buried memory above the official account.
A courageous, erudite and profoundly original work for all who are drawn to comparative religion, Qur'ānic studies, the archaeology of early Islam and the long entanglement of Christianity and Islam - and for every reader willing to ask what a faith remembers in its stones.
