Driver reconsiders the woodcut--long the poor relation of manuscript miniatures in the study of book illustration. In the mechanical reproductions she sees a valuable resource on late medieval and early modern books, with much to say about how books were produced and for what purposes; about reading habits and developments in literacy; and about the part that books played in social, political, and religious change. Her study focuses on illustrations used in the 15th and early 16th centuries and how illustration technologies helped shape the development of books printed with movable type. Driver (English, Pace U., New York) is a co-founder of the Early Book Society. The edition includes many b&w illustrations. Distributed in the US by the U. of Toronto Press.
