Do you want to teach your dog to detect an odor?
But doesn't it sound complicated and requires a lot of fancy equipment?
You just don't know where to start?
This step-by-step workbook takes the dog and handler through easy-to-follow, positive reinforcement-based training protocols resulting in an imprinted dog. The workbook is written in plain English without a heavy science-based bias; this workbook is designed for the beginner and experienced trainer alike. The reward-based lesson plans utilize treats/toys and praise and can be followed by the dog and handler without the need for an assistant.
Paul Bunker is an award-winning canine consultant and trainer that for over 35 years, has dedicated his career to working dogs. He has developed unique and original detection dog programs which have proven success in research and field deployments.
Chris Willingham, (Retired US Marine Corps, President US War Dog Association, Handler of Military Working Dog Lucca – Dickens Medal awardee & subject of the book; Top Dog: The Story of Marine Hero Lucca, Maria Goodavage) writes in his foreword: "Paul's positive and almost immediate impact on the SSD Course cannot be understated, especially given the importance of our mission during the global war on terrorism. He developed a training plan that was effective and efficient to ensure we met our ultimate mission of sending well-trained dog teams overseas."
The workbook provides detailed information regarding the storage and handling of target odors, selection of rewards, selection of the target, response (alert) training, and imprinting the target. The system uses a clicker and KONG targets odor but is flexible enough to use any marker you wish and replace the KONG pieces with target odor straight away. Whether you wish to imprint your dog for field surveys such as conservation, Human Remains, competition nose work, or pet dog enrichment, this system is for you!
