Darrow, Clarence, [1857-1938]. Smith, Thomas Vernor, [1890-1964]. Haldeman-Julius, E[manuel], Editor. Can the Individual Control His Conduct? Is Man a "Free Agent" Or Is He the Slave of His Biological Equipment? A Debate Between Clarence Darrow and Dr. Thomas V. Smith. Little Blue Book No. 843. Girard: Haldeman-Julius Publications, [1928]. 64 pp. Small Pamphlet (5" x 3"). Original printed wrappers. Light sunning to exterior. Internally clean. A very good copy. $10. * A famous debate between early 20th century icons American defense attorney Clarence Darrow and philosopher, professor and later U.S. Congressman Thomas Vernor Smith over free will. Darrow argued for determinism, believing that individuals are "slaves to their biological equipment" and environments. Smith defended a more nuanced perspective on human agency, ethics and individual moral responsibility. Not in Hunsberger.
