Paperback. A motor that hums but won't turn. An overload that keeps tripping for no obvious reason. A control panel wired exactly to print that still won't run correctly on the floor. Every industrial electrician, apprentice electrician, controls technician, and early-career engineer eventually stands in front of a moment like this - and most reference books only cover one slice of what is actually happening.A code-reference volume lists tables without explaining where the numbers come from. A theory textbook never mentions a tripped relay. A controller manual assumes the motor is already understood. A troubleshooting guide offers a checklist with no underlying physics to fall back on when the symptom doesn't match its index. Building a complete understanding usually means assembling it from several different books. This handbook is built as one continuous, cross-referenced text instead. Sixteen chapters, organized into four connected parts, move from the foundations of industrial power distribution and three-phase motor theory, through protection devices and starting methods, into modern variable-frequency-drive and programmable-logic-controller-based control, and finally into the grounding practices, systematic troubleshooting methods, and workplace safety programs that keep this equipment running safely. Later chapters build directly on the notation established earlier, so a diagnostic method near the end of the book can always be traced back to the theory section it depends on.With this handbook, you will be able to: Work through 114 fully solved examples and 288 practice problems each with a complete step-by-step solution.Interpret motor nameplate data and use it to select appropriate protection and starting equipment.Size overcurrent, short-circuit, and overload protection devices with the same methods used throughout the worked examples.Compare starting methods from across-the-line to reduced-voltage and variable-frequency approaches, and reason through which fits a given load.Read and design ladder logic control circuits and follow how a programmable logic controller performs that same logic, so the shift from relay panels to PLCs makes sense.Apply a systematic, symptom-based troubleshooting process instead of guessing at a fault.Recognize the grounding, bonding, and code-compliant wiring practices a motor circuit depends on, along with workplace safety practices such as lockout/tagout and arc-flash risk awareness.Key subjects covered include industrial power distribution, AC and three-phase motor theory, motor types and nameplate data, motor selection criteria, overcurrent and overload protection, contactors and starters, reduced-voltage and soft-starting methods, variable frequency drives, control circuit design and ladder logic, pilot devices and sensors, programmable logic controllers, grounding and bonding, systematic fault diagnosis, and maintenance and workplace electrical safety programs. This handbook is written for industrial electricians, apprentice electricians, controls technicians, and early-career engineers who need to understand motor control systems from first principles through to real-world diagnosis, as well as more experienced readers who want a single, dependable, cross-referenced reference. A complete glossary, list of symbols, and detailed index support readers at every level. If your current references each teach you a piece of this field, open a handbook built to teach you the whole thing. Get your copy and start building a deeper, more connected understanding of industrial motor control systems, from the first wiring diagram to the fault you haven't seen yet. A motor that hums but won’t turn. An overload that keeps tripping for no obvious reason. A control panel wired exactly to print that still won’t run correctly on the floor. Every industrial electrician, apprentice electrician, controls technician, and early-career engineer eventually stands in front of a moment like this — and most reference books only cover one slice of what is actually happening.
A code-reference volume lists tables without explaining where the numbers come from. A theory textbook never mentions a tripped relay. A controller manual assumes the motor is already understood. A troubleshooting guide offers a checklist with no underlying physics to fall back on when the symptom doesn’t match its index.
Later chapters build directly on the notation established earlier, so a diagnostic method near the end of the book can always be traced back to the theory section it depends on.
With this handbook, you will be able to:
- Work through 114 fully solved examples and 288 practice problems each with a complete step-by-step solution.
- Interpret motor nameplate data and use it to select appropriate protection and starting equipment.
- Size overcurrent, short-circuit, and overload protection devices with the same methods used throughout the worked examples.
- Compare starting methods from across-the-line to reduced-voltage and variable-frequency approaches, and reason through which fits a given load.
- Read and design ladder logic control circuits and follow how a programmable logic controller performs that same logic, so the shift from relay panels to PLCs makes sense.
- Apply a systematic, symptom-based troubleshooting process instead of guessing at a fault.
- Recognize the grounding, bonding, and code-compliant wiring practices a motor circuit depends on, along with workplace safety practices such as lockout/tagout and arc-flash risk awareness.
Key subjects covered include industrial power distribution, AC and three-phase motor theory, motor types and nameplate data, motor selection criteria, overcurrent and overload protection, contactors and starters, reduced-voltage and soft-starting methods, variable frequency drives, control circuit design and ladder logic, pilot devices and sensors, programmable logic controllers, grounding and bonding, systematic fault diagnosis, and maintenance and workplace electrical safety programs.
Get your copy and start building a deeper, more connected understanding of industrial motor control systems, from the first wiring diagram to the fault you haven’t seen yet.
