This is an antique beverage book, "The Innkeeper and Butler's Guide, or a Directory in the Making and Managing of British Wines; Together with Directions for the Managing, Colouring and Flavouring of Foreign Wines and Spirits, and for Making British Compounds, Peppermint, Anniseed, Shrub, &c." by John Davies. 1808 11th edition (stated); George Wilson; Leeds, England. The contents are grouped as follows: English Wines; Foreign Wines; Cyder [sic] and Perry; Malt Liquor; Vinegar; Brandy; Rum; Holland Geneva; British Compounds.please see the photos for the complete list. From the author's Preface: "The very best and most approved Receipts, which are at present in use, will be found in this Volume. I have spared no pains in collecting them, during some years, while I have had those opportunities which few have enjoyed. I flatter myself that I may, without the imputation of vanity, say, I know as much on this subject as any other man in the kingdom. I have spent some years in the South of France, where I had the advantage of learning the most approved methods in use in some of the largest Vineyards and Stores. And since my return I have had the management of some of the first Wine and Spirit Vaults in the kingdom. My acquaintance with some of the first Wine Coopers has enabled me to collect many excellent Receipts for making Home Wines. Some of them I have myself tried, and others of them have, at my recommendation, been tried by private families, and found to answer well; so that I do not scruple to warrant the whole." Condition: The book has been nicely and professionally re-bound with modern hardcovers and end papers. Consistent mild foxing to the pages. Staining/soiling to the title page; the first few and last few pages have staining/soiling along the outer edges. There are initials(?) written in old handwriting in ink near the bottom of the title page. Overall the book is in Good- condition.
