Spectroscopic research, which has been so intensively pursued during the past thirty years or so, and which.has provided such a wealth of information concerning the structure and mechanics of the atom, has until recently been mainly concentrated on the compilation of'wave-length data, expressing the positions of Spectral lines, and on the discovery and interpretation.of regularities in these data. It is in this way that much of our knowledge of the arrange ment of the electrons within the atom has been gained, and the majority of the more important atomic energy levels have been located.
