1 vols. 8vo. Macgowan (1726-1780) was a Baptist minister in London whose Calvinist preaching won a considerable following in North America." [He] . was probably more effective with his pen than in the pulpit, certainly if the number of titles authored and the frequency of their reprinting be any criteria. He had a considerable following in America as well as in Britain, and his works were translated into Welsh and Gaelic. His publications, some of them published under the pseudonym the Shaver or Pasquin Shaveblock, included most significantly The Arians and Socinians Monitor (1761), Priestcraft Defended (1768), and Dialogues of Devils (1772). His style could be ironic and caustic, even menacing and censorious, effecting a dogmatism, that not all shared, in passing sentence on the doctrinal deviance of others beyond the scope of that allocated to humankind, who must always be ignorant of belated reformation and repentance.
