Country towns are an important aspect of Irish identity, blending place and time in a unique fashion. Their stories reflect the formative periods of town foundation in Ireland: from Gaelic monastic sites to Anglo-Norman colonial settlements to early modern plantation towns.
The story of each town is here given added interest by a town plan and an evocative black-and-white illustration, usually nineteenth-century. A map gives an overview of all the towns featured in the book and classifies them according to their mode of origin.
The collective history of these Irish towns reflects the complexity of Irish civilisation in a more colourful way than could any chronological history.
