The Islamic Jesus

The Islamic Jesus by Dr. Maxwell Shimba explores the identity of Jesus Christ as presented in Islamic theology versus the Jesus of Christian faith. The book delves into one of the most critical theological debates between Christianity and Islam: the distinction between Jesus Christ, the Son of God in Christianity, and Isa bin Maryam, a prophet in Islam. Through a comparative analysis of the Quran and the Bible, Dr. Shimba highlights the theological, historical, and doctrinal differences that define Jesus in these two major religions.

The author examines the Quranic portrayal of Isa bin Maryam and its development within the historical and cultural context of Muhammad's time. He argues that Isa is distinct from the biblical Jesus, being presented as a prophet subordinate to Muhammad and lacking the divinity central to Christian belief. By contrasting Isa's role in Islam with that of Jesus in Christianity, Dr. Shimba uncovers the foundational divergences in how the two faiths perceive his mission and purpose.

The book critically analyzes the Quranic denial of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, as found in Surah An-Nisa (4:157-158), and contrasts this with the New Testament's affirmation of these events as the cornerstone of Christian faith. Dr. Shimba demonstrates how this fundamental difference shapes the doctrines of both religions, especially regarding salvation and redemption.

Dr. Shimba also addresses the Quran's assertion that all prophets, including Jesus, were Muslims who preached Islam. He challenges this claim, arguing that the biblical Jesus' teachings were rooted in the Jewish tradition and fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies, establishing a new covenant through his death and resurrection.

The book explores the implications of these theological differences for interfaith dialogue. Dr. Shimba asserts that the Islamic portrayal of Jesus diminishes his central role in Christianity and undermines the gospel's message of grace and redemption. He provides historical and scriptural evidence to defend the biblical Jesus as a figure whose identity cannot be reconciled with the Quranic Isa.

In addition, The Islamic Jesus examines the contemporary consequences of Islamic theology on the perception of Jesus in Muslim-Christian relations. Dr. Shimba highlights how misunderstandings about Jesus' identity have fueled theological and cultural divides while offering practical insights for fostering constructive dialogue based on clarity and compassion.

The book concludes by affirming the uniqueness and divinity of Jesus Christ, presenting him as the true Messiah and Savior of the world. Dr. Shimba's rigorous analysis and balanced approach make The Islamic Jesus an essential resource for anyone seeking to understand the profound differences between Christianity and Islam and their implications for faith, theology, and interreligious engagement.
