Paperback. Heracles was the strongest hero of ancient Greece-a slayer of monsters, conqueror of distant kingdoms and living man who entered the realm of the dead. Yet behind the lion skin and legendary club stood a figure marked by madness, guilt, servitude, vengeance and devastating failures of judgement. Jason and the The Labours of Heracles follows the complete arc of this extraordinary life, from the deception surrounding his birth and Hera's relentless persecution to the Twelve Labours that carried him across the known world. It recounts his battles with the Nemean lion, the Lernaean Hydra, Geryon and Cerberus, while examining the people who assisted him, suffered beside him or died because of his actions. The story continues beyond the famous Labours to his voyage with the Argonauts, the loss of Hylas, the first sack of Troy, his enslavement under Queen Omphale, the murder of Iphitus and the wars driven by broken promises and wounded honour. It concludes with the fall of Oechalia, Deianira's fatal mistake, the poisoned robe and the funeral pyre that carried Heracles from mortal agony to divine immortality. Drawing upon surviving Greek and Roman literary traditions, this book presents Heracles neither as a flawless champion nor as a simple criminal. It explores the full contradiction of a hero who protected communities and destroyed households, endured injustice and inflicted it, accepted punishment and returned repeatedly to violence. This is the story of Greece's greatest hero-and of the man who could overcome every monster except the danger within himself. Disclaimer: This is an independent work of historical and literary nonfiction examining ancient Greek and Roman mythology. The names Heracles, Hercules, Jason, the Argonauts and those of other mythological figures and places belong to ancient cultural and literary traditions and are used descriptively. This publication is not authorised, sponsored, endorsed by or affiliated with any modern entertainment company, publisher, media franchise, organisation or trademark holder. Ancient accounts frequently differ in chronology, geography, genealogy and narrative detail; where significant variants survive, they are identified or represented according to the classical sources discussed in the book.
