Katalog zur Ausstellung in Berlin 13.11.2009-11.04.2010, Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Kulturforum Potsdamer Platz.
Die Maler Johann Moritz Rugendas (1802-1858), Ferdinand Beller Bellermann (1814-1889) und Eduard Hildebrandt (1818-1869) unternahmen in der Nachfolge Alexander von Humboldts ausgedehnte Reisen durch Mittel- und S�damerika. In den vor Ort entstandenen Reiseskizzen und Naturstudien erlebten die von Humboldt angeregten Darstellungen des amerikanischen Subkontinents in ihrem neuartigen Realismus eine europaweit beachtete Bl�te. Von den Landschaften, der Flora und Fauna, den Ortschaften, Volkstypen, Sitten und Gebr�uchen der durchstreiften Regionen entwarfen die Maler ein faszinierendes, vielf�ltiges und authentisches Bild. Humboldt hat ihre Bef�higung zu 'physiognomisch-treuer landschaftlicher Schilderung verschiedener Erdzonen' fr�hzeitig erkannt, sie beraten und nach Kr�ften gef�rdert. Seine Vorstellung, in Verbindung von Kunst und Wissenschaft �ber die genaue Beobachtung der tropischen Natur auch zu einer Erneuerung der europ�ischen Landschaftskunst zu gelangen, sah er hier verwirklicht. In Deutschland sind die drei Maler noch immer zu wenig bekannt und ihre Arbeiten wegen der engen Bindungen an die Naturwissenschaften kein Thema der Kunstgeschichte.
In Mittel- und S�damerika dagegen genie�en sie als Teil des kulturellen Ged�chtnisses h�chste Aufmerksamkeit und Wertsch�tzung.
Die noch heute sp�rbare, leidvolle Geschichte der Maler nach Humboldts Tod spiegelt das Katalogbuch.
