Neuware - Some armored vehicles are remembered for a single quality. The KV-1 deserves to be understood as something far more complete: a machine shaped by Soviet doctrine, industrial pressure, crew realities, mechanical compromise, battlefield shock, and a rapidly changing war.KV-1 Heavy Tank by Kurt Grant takes the reader inside the complete story of one of the Red Army's most important early-war heavy tanks, from its origins in Soviet breakthrough doctrine to its combat service, production evolution, crew experience, variants, and eventual transition toward the next generation of Soviet heavy armor.Built around the Armored Legends Field Guide approach, this volume combines clear historical narrative with carefully selected technical detail, operational evidence, and lesser-known material that gives the reader a deeper understanding of how the KV-1 actually functioned within the Soviet war machine.Inside, you will discover: - How the KV-1 was conceived and developed, from the failures of multi-turret heavy tanks to Winter War trials, early production, and the compromises accepted before the design had fully matured.- How the tank changed in production, including turret types, armament developments, factory differences, wartime simplification, industrial relocation, and the identification details that separate major configurations.- What crews and maintenance personnel experienced, from visibility, workload, driving and communication to transmission strain, recovery, repair, and the practical challenge of keeping a forty-ton heavy tank operational.- How the KV-1 performed in war, including Barbarossa, famous early encounters, German countermeasures, Eastern Front service, the KV-1S, foreign evaluation, experimental derivatives, and the development path that ultimately led toward the IS series.Along the way, the book examines celebrated combat stories against surviving evidence, explains how German troops adapted to the KV's protection, explores what foreign evaluators discovered when they examined captured or supplied examples, and shows why apparently small production changes can reveal a much larger story about Soviet wartime industry. For tank enthusiasts, military-history readers, modelers, collectors, and anyone who wants to understand the KV-1 beyond specifications and legend, this field guide offers a focused, richly researched journey through the machine, the people around it, and the war that defined its reputation.…

Some armored vehicles are remembered for a single quality. The KV-1 deserves to be understood as something far more complete: a machine shaped by Soviet doctrine, industrial pressure, crew realities, mechanical compromise, battlefield shock, and a rapidly changing war.
KV-1 Heavy Tank by Kurt Grant takes the reader inside the complete story of one of the Red Army’s most important early-war heavy tanks, from its origins in Soviet breakthrough doctrine to its combat service, production evolution, crew experience, variants, and eventual transition toward the next generation of Soviet heavy armor.
Built around the Armored Legends Field Guide approach, this volume combines clear historical narrative with carefully selected technical detail, operational evidence, and lesser-known material that gives the reader a deeper understanding of how the KV-1 actually functioned within the Soviet war machine.
Inside, you will discover:
-
How the KV-1 was conceived and developed, from the failures of multi-turret heavy tanks to Winter War trials, early production, and the compromises accepted before the design had fully matured.
-
How the tank changed in production, including turret types, armament developments, factory differences, wartime simplification, industrial relocation, and the identification details that separate major configurations.
-
What crews and maintenance personnel experienced, from visibility, workload, driving and communication to transmission strain, recovery, repair, and the practical challenge of keeping a forty-ton heavy tank operational.
-
How the KV-1 performed in war, including Barbarossa, famous early encounters, German countermeasures, Eastern Front service, the KV-1S, foreign evaluation, experimental derivatives, and the development path that ultimately led toward the IS series.
Along the way, the book examines celebrated combat stories against surviving evidence, explains how German troops adapted to the KV’s protection, explores what foreign evaluators discovered when they examined captured or supplied examples, and shows why apparently small production changes can reveal a much larger story about Soviet wartime industry.
For tank enthusiasts, military-history readers, modelers, collectors, and anyone who wants to understand the KV-1 beyond specifications and legend, this field guide offers a focused, richly researched journey through the machine, the people around it, and the war that defined its reputation.
