Host country to the 1988 Olympic Games, the Republic of Korea (‘South Korea’) became prominent in world affairs but surprisingly little was known about the general public. First published in 1988, Korea provides a complete picture of the country and its people. The authors reveal the continuing importance of the country’s economic development, which enabled it to develop almost overnight from a starvation economy into an international force and offer an insight into the distinct and under-appreciated cultural tradition of the Republic of Korea. They set the Korean peninsula in its Asian context and give a fascinating description of the Korean people―their society, language, customs, and religions (both old and new), the role of the family and of women, and the aspirations of ordinary Koreans as their country emerged into the international limelight. This book is a must read for students of Asian studies and history, and general readers interested in the topic.

Informazioni sull’autore
James Hoare has a PhD in Japanese history and was for 33 years a Research Analyst in the British Diplomatic Service. After postings to Seoul (1981–85) and Beijing (1988–91), he opened the British Embassy in Pyongyang in 2001. After retirement, he taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London and has been a regular radio and TV commentator, mainly on Korea. He has published widely on aspects of East Asian politics and history. His most recent work is East Asia Observed: Selected Writings 1973–2021 (2023).
Susan Pares worked for a number of years in the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office and had several postings to East Asia, either singly or accompanying her husband, James Hoare. Her subsequent career was in research, editing and writing, in particular on East Asian subjects. This interest has given way in recent years to family history. She is a trustee of the Elizabeth Heyrick Society and of the Friends of the Women’s Library at the London School of Economics.

Descrizione dello Store
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
