English summary: The notion that societal developments are primarily shaped by periods of crisis, and that recurrent crises are a constitutive element of history, is characteristic of the self-perception of modern societies. This contributions to this volume delineate this highly contingent development. They examine the invention of the crisis as a form of societal self-perception within different historical contexts and outline the use and proliferation of the crisis model in different social and cultural contexts within western-, mid, southern and eastern Europe. In this way, the volume contributes to a coherent historicization of the crisis phenomenon. German description: Die Auffassung, dass gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen massgeblich durch Krisen gepragt werden und dass die Wiederkehr von Krisen eine konstitutive Dimension von Geschichte ist, ist kennzeichnend fur die Selbstwahrnehmung moderner Gesellschaften. Diese in hohem Masse kontingente Entwicklung zeichnen die Beitrage dieses Bandes nach. Sie situieren die Erfindung der Krise als Form der gesellschaftlichen Selbstwahrnehmung innerhalb unterschiedlicher historischer Kontexte und spuren der Anwendung und Verbreitung von Krisendispositiven in unterschiedlichen sozialen und kulturellen Konstellationen innerhalb von West-, Mittel-, Sud- und Osteuropa nach. Hierdurch tragt der Band bei zu einer konsequenten Historisierung von Krise bei.

Dr. Rudolf Schlogl ist Ordinarius der Neueren Geschichte an der Universitat Konstanz. Eva Wiebel ist seit 2010 als freiberufliche wissenschaftliche Lektorin in Konstanz tatig.
