A Last Chance Goodbye
Book Four of The Adventures of Left Eye Lazy
F. Ryan "Left Eye" De Dominicus has survived a lot in his short life - a mother's absence, a bully turned unexpected ally, a best friend's cancer scare, and the quiet, complicated love of the grandparents who raised him. But nothing prepared him for the week that changes everything.
Two days ago, his Gigi - the woman who raised him, fed him, and taught him how to tie a tie standing in front of a bedroom mirror - passed away. Today, Woodmont Falls buries her, and Left Eye has to find a way to stand tall through a funeral, a eulogy, and a house that suddenly feels too quiet.
And that's only the beginning.
By week's end, Left Eye will also have to say goodbye to Chance - his best friend, his partner in every wiffle ball game and inside joke since they were small enough to need a boost over the backstop fence - as Chance's family moves eight hundred miles away. One last wiffle ball game. One last sunset on the beach. One last letter, folded and tucked into a back pocket, carrying everything words can't quite say.
In the middle of all this loss, someone unexpected walks back through the front door: Left Eye's mother, Amanda, a woman he barely knows, carrying years of absence and a fragile promise of recovery. Left Eye must decide whether to let her back in - not with blind forgiveness, but with the hard, honest kind that comes from a kid old enough to ask real questions and brave enough to sit with uncomfortable answers.
A Last Chance Goodbye is the story of a boy learning that growing up means holding grief and hope in the same hand - that some goodbyes are permanent, some are just the start of something new, and that the people who show up, even imperfectly, are the ones worth holding onto.
Book Four of The Adventures of Left Eye Lazy continues the heartfelt, honest, occasionally hilarious story of a kid finding his way through loss, friendship, and family - a series unafraid to tell young readers the truth: that even the hardest chapters of life can still end in love.
