Paperback. The laboratory used to have an address.It was the place where the case arrived, where the people making it worked, where the records were kept, where the invoice came from-and where responsibility could be found when something went wrong.Today, a single dental restoration may be prescribed in one location, managed by another business, designed remotely, manufactured in a different country, finished locally and supplied under the responsibility of an organisation the patient may never know exists.The work did not disappear.It was unbundled.The Last of the Laboratories investigates what happened to the dental laboratory when design, manufacture, quality control, commercial ownership and regulatory responsibility stopped occupying the same building.Drawing on more than twenty years around dental technology, laboratory management, practices, education, implementation and commercial systems, A.N. Mercer examines the economic and institutional forces reshaping dental manufacturing.The book explores: what a laboratory fee really pays for beyond material and machine time;why patient price, practice revenue, laboratory turnover and profit are not the same thing;how remakes become technical failures, commercial promises and financial costs at once;why a busy laboratory is not necessarily a resilient one;how routine work became easier to outsource, centralise and move overseas;why nobody can accurately count the true volume of offshore dental work;whether country of origin tells us anything reliable about quality;how one restoration can have separate clinical, commercial, design, manufacturing and regulatory addresses;what laboratory groups and manufacturing centres genuinely gain through scale;how a laboratory can create substantial value without physically manufacturing;what practices inherit when they bring production in-house;and why quality depends on traceability, evidence, corrective action and clear responsibility-not simply geography.This is not an argument against outsourcing, large laboratory groups, digital production, overseas manufacturing or chairside dentistry. Each can create real value.It is an argument for understanding exactly what has moved, what remains and who is capable of answering for the finished device.Written for dental technicians, laboratory owners, dentists, managers, educators, manufacturers and anyone interested in the changing structure of dental production, The Last of the Laboratories offers a new definition of the institution at the centre of the work: A laboratory is no longer defined by where every stage happens. It is defined by who can answer for all of them. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.…

The laboratory used to have an address.
It was the place where the case arrived, where the people making it worked, where the records were kept, where the invoice came from—and where responsibility could be found when something went wrong.
Today, a single dental restoration may be prescribed in one location, managed by another business, designed remotely, manufactured in a different country, finished locally and supplied under the responsibility of an organisation the patient may never know exists.
The work did not disappear.
It was unbundled.
The Last of the Laboratories investigates what happened to the dental laboratory when design, manufacture, quality control, commercial ownership and regulatory responsibility stopped occupying the same building.
Drawing on more than twenty years around dental technology, laboratory management, practices, education, implementation and commercial systems, A.N. Mercer examines the economic and institutional forces reshaping dental manufacturing.
The book explores:
- what a laboratory fee really pays for beyond material and machine time;
- why patient price, practice revenue, laboratory turnover and profit are not the same thing;
- how remakes become technical failures, commercial promises and financial costs at once;
- why a busy laboratory is not necessarily a resilient one;
- how routine work became easier to outsource, centralise and move overseas;
- why nobody can accurately count the true volume of offshore dental work;
- whether country of origin tells us anything reliable about quality;
- how one restoration can have separate clinical, commercial, design, manufacturing and regulatory addresses;
- what laboratory groups and manufacturing centres genuinely gain through scale;
- how a laboratory can create substantial value without physically manufacturing;
- what practices inherit when they bring production in-house;
- and why quality depends on traceability, evidence, corrective action and clear responsibility—not simply geography.
This is not an argument against outsourcing, large laboratory groups, digital production, overseas manufacturing or chairside dentistry. Each can create real value.
It is an argument for understanding exactly what has moved, what remains and who is capable of answering for the finished device.
Written for dental technicians, laboratory owners, dentists, managers, educators, manufacturers and anyone interested in the changing structure of dental production, The Last of the Laboratories offers a new definition of the institution at the centre of the work:
A laboratory is no longer defined by where every stage happens. It is defined by who can answer for all of them.
