SIR WALTER SCOTT 2 VINTAGE BOOKS ORNATE LEATHER COLORED ENGRAVINGS 1839? On offer here are two vintage books which I believe should be kept together as they come from the partnership of David Bogue and Charles Tilt of London in mid-nineteenth century. Please find: Lay of the Last Minstrel and Marmion- A Tale of Flodden Field by Sir Walter Scott. These two small hard cover books are very similarly bound and both have two title pages reflecting the involvement of Charles Tilt and David Bogue, publishers both of Fleet Street, London albeit with conflicting and confusing dates. What distinguishes these books are the illustrations which are very finely done hand-colored engravings (six or more of them in each book!). The books are bound in black leather with very ornate gilt decorations and titles on both covers and spines. The gilt coats of arms on the covers however are different. The page edges are full gilt all-round in both volumes. Condition: These two small leather-bound books are in very good condition although Lay of the Last Minstrel has suffered more rubbing to the finish of the leather. Both books show rubbing and bumping to the corners and spine tips. Inside both books have some light penciled remarks probably from a bookseller. One remark suggests that the books come from the library of Lord Cornwallis but there is no corroboration, and the timing would be difficult. Some of the colored engravings have tissue-guards like the Frontispieces but not all of them. The front hinge of Marmion is cracked but all the others intact and both bindings seem tight and sound. These books are not ex-library.
