Good orig. black cloth, spine ends chipped and rubbed. xiv, 13-273 p.; 19 cm. Library bookplate on rear pastedown. `.inasmuch as a criminal leaning to the teachings of the Church of Rome is one of the most popular and current of all the charges made against us, a charge we may charitably hope often, though not always, made through ignorance, not malice, I shall occupy a portion of your time with the evidence which this prayer affords of the care of the Church to guard her children, especially against a monstrous and unscriptural dogma, utterly unknown to the Universal Church prior to the year 1215. My great object now is to show how strongly the line is drawn by the Church between a real presence and that real presence which Transubstantiation contemplates, and of necessity implies. I shall draw my proofs of this most important distinction from the Rubrics attached to the Prayer of Consecration, and from the prayer itself.' (p. 206-08) -- Author unidentified, the preface written in Philadelphia. Dedicated to the Rev. S. M. Haskins of Brooklyn, New York. -- Facing the title-page: `I have read two or three of the Lectures on the Communion, and, judging from them, I thank that the volume now in preparation by the author will do good, and pvore useful to our people. Morgan Dix.' -- Pencilled signature on front pastedown: Jno. M. Mitchell. Binding is Hardcover.…
