Paperback. "Left Wing Unionism" offers a penetrating examination of the radical factions and ideologies that transformed the American labor movement in the early 20th century. This work dissects the internal dynamics of trade unions as they grappled with the influence of socialist, communist, and syndicalist theories during a period of intense industrial upheaval. The book provides a detailed study of the various tactics employed by left-wing militants, including the strategic debate between "dual unionism"-the creation of separate radical organizations-and the policy of "boring from within" existing conservative structures like the American Federation of Labor. The author explores the historical development of these movements, tracing their origins and analyzing their impact on collective bargaining and political activism. By examining the organizational strategies and ideological conflicts of the era, "Left Wing Unionism" sheds light on the broader struggle for workers' rights and the quest for fundamental social change. This scholarly work remains a vital resource for understanding the complexities of labor history, the evolution of union politics, and the enduring tension between reformist and revolutionary goals in the United States. Its rigorous analysis captures a pivotal moment when the future of organized labor was being fiercely contested on shop floors and in union halls across the nation. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
