"Life and Letters of Janet Erskine Stuart, Superior General of the Society of the Sacred Heart, 1857-1914" is a comprehensive biographical account of one of the most influential figures in the history of Catholic religious life. This work chronicles the remarkable spiritual journey and administrative leadership of Janet Erskine Stuart, who served as the Superior General of her order during a period of significant global expansion. The narrative follows her life from her Protestant roots to her conversion and subsequent rise within the Society, emphasizing her dedication to the education of women and the spiritual formation of her sisters.

A significant portion of the work is dedicated to her personal correspondence, which reveals a woman of profound wit, intellectual vigor, and deep mystical insight. Her letters offer a rare window into the internal life of a religious leader, dealing with themes of faith, sacrifice, and the challenges of governing a worldwide organization at the turn of the twentieth century. Through Maud Monahan's careful documentation, the book captures the essence of Stuart's educational philosophy and her unwavering commitment to the Sacred Heart. This volume remains a vital resource for those interested in religious history, the development of women's religious orders, and the lived experience of Catholic spirituality.
