Neuware - 'The Lives of the Rakes: 'Old Q' and Barrymore' provides a vivid and compelling account of the flamboyant and often scandalous lives of the British aristocracy during the Georgian and Regency eras. This volume focuses on two of the period's most notorious figures: William Douglas, the 4th Duke of Queensberry-popularly known as 'Old Q'-and the Earl of Barrymore. E. Beresford Chancellor expertly chronicles their exploits, capturing the essence of an age defined by high-stakes gambling, social excess, and public notoriety. The work examines the culture of the 'rake,' exploring how these men navigated the intersection of wealth, power, and social transgression. From the Duke of Queensberry's enduring presence in the worlds of sport and racing to the chaotic and brief life of the Earl of Barrymore, the narrative offers a rich tapestry of 18th-century manners and morals. Chancellor's biographical study goes beyond mere anecdote, providing an insightful look at the personalities who became symbols of an era's indulgence. This work is an essential resource for readers interested in British social history, historical biography, and the colorful, complex figures who once dominated London society. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
