Paperback. "The Lives of the Rakes: The Regency Rakes" offers a compelling biographical survey of the flamboyant and often scandalous figures who dominated the social landscape of the English Regency. E. Beresford Chancellor examines the era of the Prince Regent, a time characterized by an unparalleled mix of refined elegance and dissolute behavior. This volume focuses on the legendary dandies and bucks whose lives were defined by their wit, fashion, and involvement in the high-stakes world of London society. The work provides detailed accounts of prominent individuals like Beau Brummell and the circle surrounding George IV, detailing their influence on the customs and manners of the early 19th century. Through stories of gambling, extravagant spending, and social intrigue, Chancellor paints a vivid picture of a class that prioritized pleasure and style above all else. "The Lives of the Rakes: The Regency Rakes" is an insightful study of British social history, capturing the spirit of an age where the pursuit of notoriety was a fine art.
