Elijah Hinsdale Burritt (1794-1838) came from New Britain, Conn., trained as a blacksmith, studied at Williams College, taught school in Milledgeville, Georgia and then in New Britain, Conn., and joined a party of colonists going to Houston, Texas. He is largely remembered, however, for his Geography of the Heavens and the accompanying Atlas, designed to illustrate the Geography of the Heavens. The first editions were published in 1833, and others followed in quick succession. As an adult he was active as a lecturer in many causes, opposing slavery, working for temperance, and trying to achieve world peace.
