Carries only original 1912 copyright date, but this is the 1925 A.L. Burt "Photoplay" edition, iIllustrated with four glossy B&W production stills from the landmark 1925 First National silent film directed by Harry Hoyt and starring Wallace Beery and Bessie Love, with stop-motion dinosaur special effects by Willis O'Brien (who later animated the creatures for Merian Cooper & Ernest Schoedsack's classic 1933 "King Kong.") Professor George Edward Challenger (partially based on real-life explorer Percy Fawcett) is doubtless Conan Doyle's second-best-known character. The 1925 film was "lost" for more than 50 years. By contract, all known prints had been destroyed in 1929. Only an abbreviated 16 mm. print was known until a nearly full length print was discovered in the film archives of the Czech Republic in the '90s. Blank FFE has been neatly excised from this copy, probably to eliminate a previous owner's name, since there are no signs whatever of a lending-library history. Of the original jacket, only the colorful front panel and the front flap remain -- the spine and rear panel of the jacket are long gone. Thus, "fair in fair," but a hard-to-find book in any original jacket. Reduced from $500.
