Hardcover. "The Main Stream" is a compelling collection of literary essays and cultural critiques by the esteemed American critic Stuart Sherman. Written during a transformative era in American letters, this work explores the intellectual and aesthetic currents that define the nation's literary heritage. Sherman offers deep reflections on a diverse array of writers, ranging from naturalists like John Burroughs and William Beebe to philosophical giants such as Henry David Thoreau. The volume serves as a roadmap to the shifting tastes and evolving values of the early twentieth century, as Sherman navigates the tension between tradition and modernity. With a keen eye for detail and a graceful prose style, he evaluates the contributions of his contemporaries while situating them within a broader historical context. These essays provide not only a critique of individual works but also a broader meditation on the role of literature in shaping public consciousness. "The Main Stream" remains an essential resource for readers interested in the history of American criticism, the development of the essay form, and the enduring questions of culture and identity that permeate great writing. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
