- Religion and Revolution in the Eighteenth Century: Scientific Approaches to Religion
In Making a Heaven of Hell, William C. Horne shows how the evolution of poetic discourse during this period reinforces the companionate myth. His methodology supports such historians as Lawrence Stone and Edward Shorter in viewing the companionate myth as progressive. At the same time, Horne engages the feminist critiques of Mary Poovey, Ellen Pollack, and others, who argue that companionate ideology is not a liberalizing influence but has a patriarchal bias. Horne contends that such arguments may have a basis in the protofeminist writings of the period, suggesting it is no coincidence that this era witnessed the emergence of the first women professional poets. Although revisionist feminist critics tend to see eighteenth-century women poets as critical of companionate ideas such as dominion in marriage, Horne shows that most women poets, especially in the late eighteenth century, are as pro-companionate and pro-domesticity as the male poets.
Horne's study not only includes poems by such familiar figures as Dryden, Pope, and Swift but also recovers a large number of little-known poems, many of them by women. The book thus has important implications for the reconsideration of the literary canon. Horne argues that attention to the ways in which canonical and noncanonical poets use - or fail to use - modes, formats, conventions, and myths can best help readers understand the shifting and problematic ideologies of companionship and domesticity.
Enhancing the book's value to scholars is an appended checklist of marriage poems that identifies each poem by author and initial date of publication. Where pertinent and available, Horne has also included the poem's date of composition, the collection in which it originally appeared, and the modern collection or microfilm series in which it can be found. The book is thus an important research tool as well as a major contribution to the study of Restoration and eighteenth-century poetry.

The Shipping Rates and Speeds that appear with the book records are approximations. Factors such as the size and weight of the book, as well as the country of destination, may necessitate an adjustment to the cost of delivery. The policy of Basileia Books is that the customer pays for the actual cost of postage. The accounting system at abebooks necessitates a surcharge of approximately 13.5 percent above the actual costs. We will continue to offer customers the most desirable and cost-efficient means of delivery, despite the ever-rising prices. Basileia Books ships orders to customers through the United States Postal Service. Other shipping outlets are available upon special request. Among the options are DHL, Federal Express, and the United Parcel Service (UPS). For postage withing the USA, Basileia Books includes the charge for Signature Confirmation in the postage price with each book order. Customers who seek an exception to this policy must do so before finalizing a purchase from Basileia Books. Under no circumstances will Basileia Books be held liable for non-delivery of items that have been received by the Postal Service. Customers who want to insure an item in transit should make a request as part of the book order. In most cases, insurance will necessitate a modest increase in the price of postage. For delivery to destinations outside the USA, the standard method of delivery is First-Class Mail International at the United States Postal Service. International customers should be aware that although this is a reliable method, it does not provide insurance or tracking. In a small number of cases, the book may be delayed in delivery for several weeks or even a few months. International customers who prefer the security of insurance and/or tracking should indicate their preference at the time of placing an order, and Basileia Books will indicate the increased price for postage.
