Manfred is Lord Byron’s dark, supernatural dramatic poem of guilt, defiance, isolation, and spiritual torment. Set among the mountains and castles of the Alps, the work follows Manfred, a proud and haunted nobleman who seeks forgetfulness from spirits, powers, and the forces of nature, yet refuses ordinary consolation, religious submission, or human judgement. His mysterious crime, his grief over Astarte, and his refusal to bend before earthly or supernatural authority make him one of the central examples of the Byronic hero.

First published in 1817, Manfred stands at the intersection of Romantic poetry, Gothic drama, metaphysical tragedy, and philosophical rebellion. It contains supernatural elements and is commonly read as a Romantic closet drama rather than a conventional stage play, making it especially useful for readers interested in Gothic literature, British Romanticism, dramatic poetry, tragic heroes, occult atmosphere, and the literary lineage that runs from Byron through later dark romantic and psychological fiction. It remains one of Byron’s most intense and distinctive works.

Lord Byron was the pen name and title by which George Gordon Byron became famous as one of the defining poets of British Romanticism. Born in 1788, Byron achieved international celebrity with works such as Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, Don Juan, The Giaour, The Corsair, and Manfred. His poetry combined passion, wit, scandal, melancholy, political restlessness, and a fascination with proud, alienated figures who stand apart from conventional society. Byron’s life and work helped create the enduring image of the Byronic hero: brilliant, wounded, defiant, seductive, morally troubled, and unwilling to submit quietly to the world around him. He died in 1824 while supporting the Greek struggle for independence, leaving behind one of the most influential reputations in nineteenth-century literature.
