Paperback. Some cities are alive. Harrowick is in love. Grant Ellery has always known Harrowick doesn't behave like other cities. Streets change direction when you aren't looking. Courtyards appear for a single night and never again. The rain falls in patterns you could almost read. And lately, the city seems to be reading him back. Mapping Harrowick has been Grant's quiet obsession for years-until the night he meets Simon Carrow, a man with a smile like lamplight and the unnerving claim that he is the city, or at least the part of it that remembers how to be human. Simon knows every hidden staircase, every shy square, every door that only opens when you're carrying a secret. and he wants Grant to walk them with him. What begins as a cartographer's curiosity deepens into something far more dangerous-and far more tender-as the city itself begins to court them both. Markets spring up to greet them. Lanterns bloom overhead. And Harrowick's games grow stranger, as if testing how much of themselves they're willing to give. But Harrowick is vast, and not all of its memories are kind. Beneath the flirtation lies an undertow of secrets, promises, and people the city has loved-and lost-before. If Grant wants to keep Simon, he'll have to prove he can see Harrowick for everything it is: beautiful, impossible, and not entirely safe. Lyrical, romantic, and brimming with magic, Maps for When the City Flirts Back is a queer fantasy about love that reshapes the world around it-and the streets that watch every step. Grant Ellery has always known Harrowick doesn’t behave like other cities. Streets change direction when you aren’t looking. Courtyards appear for a single night and never again. The rain falls in patterns you could almost read. And lately, the city seems to be reading him back.
Mapping Harrowick has been Grant’s quiet obsession for years—until the night he meets Simon Carrow, a man with a smile like lamplight and the unnerving claim that he is the city, or at least the part of it that remembers how to be human. Simon knows every hidden staircase, every shy square, every door that only opens when you’re carrying a secret… and he wants Grant to walk them with him.
What begins as a cartographer’s curiosity deepens into something far more dangerous—and far more tender—as the city itself begins to court them both. Markets spring up to greet them. Lanterns bloom overhead. And Harrowick’s games grow stranger, as if testing how much of themselves they’re willing to give.
But Harrowick is vast, and not all of its memories are kind. Beneath the flirtation lies an undertow of secrets, promises, and people the city has loved—and lost—before. If Grant wants to keep Simon, he’ll have to prove he can see Harrowick for everything it is: beautiful, impossible, and not entirely safe.
Lyrical, romantic, and brimming with magic, Maps for When the City Flirts Back is a queer fantasy about love that reshapes the world around it—and the streets that watch every step.
