Hardcover. Marked by History begins with a medical form and a question that should have been simple: What do you know about your family history? For Cathy R. Foreman, that question opens into something much larger than names, dates, and diagnoses. It becomes an exploration of what is known, what is missing, and what generations of silence, survival, and incomplete records can leave behind.Blending personal reflection, cultural history, medical context, and ancestral memory, Marked by History examines how the past continues to shape the way Black families understand health, identity, trust, and belonging. From family death certificates and inherited stories to medical exploitation, racial disparities, and the limits of what official records can hold, Foreman traces the marks history leaves on bodies, families, and communities. This is not a traditional memoir or a search for one single answer. It is a layered examination of how history travels through generations - through what is documented, what is withheld, what is remembered, and what must be reclaimed.Thoughtful, intimate, and deeply human, Marked by History asks what happens when the past is not past at all, but present in the questions we answer, the care we receive, the stories we inherit, and the choices we make with what we finally come to know. Prompted by a question about family history, Marked by History explores the connections between ancestry, medicine, memory, and the enduring influence of the past on the lives we live today.
