One of the great achievements of twentieth-century theology, Joseph Jungmann's towering work is a comprehensive study of the origins, evolution, and theology of the Mass from its earliest forms to the dawn of Vatican II. With a revised chapter previously unavailable in the two-volume edition, Joseph Jungmann's The Mass of the Roman Rite is the definitive study of the Roman Catholic Mass. The Mass of the Roman Rite is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand deeply Roman Catholic worship. The fruit of over a decade of painstaking research, it is a magisterial treatment of every part of the Mass: its form, its history, its theology. The two-volume work is divided into four parts: the first part carefully traces the evolution of the Mass from domestic celebration to grand public ritual. The second part is an analysis of the nature and meaning of the Mass. The third and fourth parts are studies of the individual rituals found within the Mass: their history, their meaning, and their significance. The Mass of the Roman Rite was hugely influential on the reformers of Vatican II. As the Church continues to reflect on the Mass and reform its rites and rituals, Jungmann's work is sure to find a new audience.

Joseph A. Jungmann, S.J. (18891975), an Austrian Roman Catholic priest and scholar, was ordained to the priesthood in 1913 and entered the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) four years later. He spent most of his career as professor of pastoral theology at the University of Innsbruck, where he taught both catechetics and liturgy.
