Paperback. "The Mastermind of Mars" is a captivating work of planetary romance and science fiction, continuing the legendary chronicles of Barsoom. In this installment, Edgar Rice Burroughs introduces Ulysses Paxton, an American soldier transported across the stars to the vibrant and dangerous landscape of Mars. Unlike the warrior-focused narratives of earlier volumes, this story delves into the realms of scientific ethics and high-stakes intrigue.Paxton becomes the apprentice to Ras Thavas, the titular Mastermind of Mars, a brilliant but cold-hearted surgeon who has perfected the art of organ and brain transplantation. The plot thickens when Paxton falls in love with Valla Dia, a princess whose beautiful form has been stolen by an aging empress. Driven by honor and affection, Paxton must navigate the treacherous political and social structures of the Martian city-states to restore his beloved's identity and challenge the hubris of his master.Filled with strange creatures, advanced yet alien technology, and the characteristic pulse-pounding action for which Burroughs is celebrated, "The Mastermind of Mars" remains a cornerstone of early twentieth-century speculative fiction. It offers a unique exploration of identity and the ethical dilemmas of scientific discovery set against the backdrop of a dying, heroic world. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
