Paperback. In the Last City of Man, justice runs on alchemy, ravens, and a very good bluff.Thom Havenkin is a judicar - sworn law of Teredon, the last refuge of humanity since the world fell to the Shroud. He's got a trained raven for a partner, a stave for a weapon, and an alchemical serum that fills his blood with fire and feeds him cryptic visions of the crimes he's meant to solve. He's also got a weakness for pretty faces, cheap wine, and terrible decisions - none of which prepare him for what's coming. When the guildmaster of the Red Hand loses his sister without a trace, he strikes a desperate bargain with the one judicar reckless enough to take the case. Three days. Find the girl, or watch a guild war burn through the Warrens. But Thom's hunt drags him somewhere far darker than guild politics - into the path of a legendary assassin everyone swears doesn't exist, alchemical weapons that freeze men black from the inside, and a conspiracy that reaches into the oldest, coldest corners of the city's secrets.Thom always figured he'd die charming, drunk, or clever. He never expected all three might not be enough. On the Matter of the Red Hand is the first book in JM Guillen's Judicar's Oath, a Lovecraftian steampunk noir set in the sprawling multiverse of The Paean of Sundered Dreams.
