221 p. bookstore label on inside flap of dust jacket, some edge wear to dust jacket The Meiji Period (1868-1912) was the time when Japan got rid of its pre-modern system of governing and was transfigured into a modern nation, and was the starting point towards the Japan of today. In this period, there was a rapid and overall modernization in politics, economics, military affairs, society, thought, culture, etc. As a result, within almost half a century, Japan managed to organize herself as a modern nation. Such a rapid modernization of Japan in the Meiji period was of big interest not only to Japanese scholars but also to the world's other scholars in cultural and social sciences; especially after World War II, a great number of research findings have been made public. The present work is a collection of historical records for those who have already read a few books on Japan in the Meiji period and who would want to acquire deeper knowledge about it. The assembled historical records are in principle limited to "contemporary sources." Volume One contains matter pertaining to the important treaties between the Bafuku and foreign countries, some historical sources showing the process of establishing the administrative system of early Meiji, the Constitution of the Empire of Japan, the latter's interpretations and also relevant laws. These are important documents which prescribe Japan's political and diplomatic policies in the Meiji period, and should be constantly referred to as the fundamental historical sources when reading the historical sources pertaining to individual events. 0.0.
