Né aux États-Unis en 1954, après avoir fait ses études à Harvard University, il a vécu en France de 1976 à 2005 et habite actuellement en Suisse. Il a été rédacteur en chef de la revue d'art française Connaissance des Arts entre 1979 et 2002 et est actuellement conseiller de rédaction du Trust Aga Kan pour la culture. Minimum Space Maximum Living M2 est le premier livre de Philip à être publié par la maison d'édition The Images Publishing Group.
