Second Edition. Dust jacket very worn and rubbed in a clear protective sleeve, unclipped. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. Colour frontis plate plus 7 further colour plates and 92 b/w photographs on plates, plus 53 text drawings. It is only within comparatively recent times that a serious attemt has been made to collect military models of all ages and to record them for posterity. The Frenchmen D'Allemagne and Forrer were probably the first to realize their historical significance, and their example was so speedily followed that today there is a vast and world-wide body of collectors, all interested in the sometimes complex, and always fascinating history of the subjects. In the present comprehensive volume the history of military and other miniatures is traced from the earliest times through the Middle Ages and to the subsequent periods of famous and much sought-after masters of the art. Makers in almost every country are thoroughly classified and all that is known of their methods is recorded. Considerable attention is paid to the modification and adaptation of existing commercial figures for special purposes or for uniforms or actions not otherwise attainable.
