Hardcover. "The Nature of Life" is a profound philosophical and biological inquiry into the defining characteristics of living organisms. Written by Eugenio Rignano, this work seeks to bridge the gap between purely mechanistic interpretations of biology and vitalistic theories, proposing a unique perspective on the purposive nature of life processes. Rignano delves into the concept of teleology, examining how living matter exhibits goal-directed behavior that distinguishes it from inert physical substances. The author explores the fundamental laws of biology, focusing on the role of memory and habit-concepts he integrates into a biological framework to explain development and evolution. By analyzing the energetic and physical-chemical properties of organisms, Rignano argues for a view of life that recognizes its inherent striving and organization. "The Nature of Life" remains a significant contribution to the philosophy of science, offering readers a rigorous investigation into the essence of biological existence and the theoretical foundations of the life sciences during a pivotal era of scientific discovery. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
