Hardcover. "The New Methods in Arithmetic" is a seminal work in the field of educational psychology and mathematics instruction, written by the influential psychologist Edward Lee Thorndike. This comprehensive guide explores the intersection of learning theory and practical pedagogy, offering a revolutionary approach to teaching arithmetic that prioritizes the psychological needs of the learner. Thorndike advocates for the elimination of artificial and uninteresting drills, suggesting instead that mathematical concepts be introduced through real-life situations and activities that foster genuine engagement. The text delves into the importance of habit formation, the organization of learning materials, and the assessment of progress in a way that aligns with the natural development of the child's mind. By focusing on the laws of learning, such as readiness and exercise, Thorndike provides educators with a systematic framework for improving student performance and conceptual understanding. "The New Methods in Arithmetic" remains a foundational text for those interested in the history of education, the evolution of teaching methodologies, and the application of psychological principles to the classroom. It serves as an essential resource for teachers and researchers seeking to understand the roots of modern pedagogical practices. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
