Good condition copy in original brown cloth, with embossed floral design on covers and gilt titles on spine Spine and edges faded, but binding is still very solid with only slight edge wear Text is tight and unmarked with just slight foxing on edges Two previous owners' bookplates are on inside front cover and ffep, and a Google search finds that each had a noteworthy history: Rev J Henry Scudamore Burr From the Royal Cornwall Gazette, 14 May 1852 Coroner's Inquest Rev J Henry Scudamore Burr (The following inquests have been held by William Hichens, Esq, coroner: - ) At Porthleaven, in the parish of Stithians (sic), on the body of the Rev J Henry Scudamore Burr, of Exeter The deceased came to Porthleaven on Saturday last, to take charge of the district church there, in the absence of the curate, Mr Williams, who had left for a short time in consequence of ill health Mr Burr lodged at the house of Mrs Prudence Row, and on coming down stairs on Tuesday morning, said to her, "I shall go and take a dip," and went out He had bathed on the preceding morning, and was then absent about an hour, when he returned and washed and dressed himself to go to the vicarage to breakfast; and Mrs Row, supposing that he intended to do the same on that morning, and finding that he did not return, began to fear that something might have happened to him, which she at once communicated to a neighbour, who went in search of him The deceased's clothes were found on a rock near to the beach, but nothing could be seen of him, which, confirming Mrs Row's fears, a search for the body immediately commenced, but it was not found for many hours, and was at length taken up on the shore near Gunwalloe Cove, about a mile and half from the spot where he bathed Verdict, "Found Drowned" (Transcribed by Karen Duvall) and Colonel Thomas Myles Sandys (1837 - 1911) was a British army officer and Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1911 295 + 4p ads pp.…
