CHAPTER 1
Someone Watching Over Me
"Hurry up, grandma! Hurry up, grandma!" The three of us held on to the top of the fence, swaying back and forth as we chanted.
A visit from Gram always made the day special. Standing on the low, white picket fence in our front yard, my bare feet between the pickets, I stretched my neck to keep the bus stop in view. My brother Jim who was just one year older than me, and my sister Judy who was seven, were with me. My younger sister, June, was still a baby so she stayed inside. I was four years old, and Gram was already a huge part of my life.
Then, the big, blue commuter bus pulled up to the stop, and Gram stepped down in her light pink nurse's aide uniform. I jumped up and down as I watched her walk down the street toward us with a big, loving smile on her face. I remember her chestnut brown hair pulled back loosely to frame her beautiful face. She was still stunning at fifty years old.
The four of us children were raised as Catholics. We attended Catholic school and each made our First Holy Communion at St. Leo's Church. I remember it being a big deal. A picture of devotion, I practiced saying my prayers every night to prepare for the big day. When it finally arrived, I felt like a miniature bride in my white dress and long veil.
It was very shortly after my communion that my parents split up. They had horrible battles with lots of screaming and yelling. During those arguments, I would run up the stairs to my room, and hide deep under the covers of my bed. I held my hands over my ears while I hummed a song, waiting for the screaming to stop.
Once, I remember falling asleep while hiding there, and being awakened by someone calling my name.
I heard it very clearly. "Joni! Joni! It's okay."
I sat up in the bed and looked around to see who was calling my name. But I was alone in the room. I was positive I had not imagined what I heard. I sat there for a moment wondering where the voice had come from. Who had said my name? A shiver went up my spine as I pulled the covers up over my head once more, and peered from beneath them. I never shared that eerie experience with anyone, but I never forgot it. I know someone had been in that room with me.
It wasn't long after that experience that my sisters, brother, and I moved out of our comfortable, two-story home and into a run-down duplex with my mother. She was a far cry from the perfect mother. The only attention we received was when she yelled at us for not cleaning the house well enough. Since she worked nights as a bartender, we had to get ourselves up and off to school each morning while she slept. I was in third grade at the time. I made myself breakfast, and wore the same dirty clothes to school each day.

We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. Returns Policy
We ask all customers to contact us for authorisation should they wish to return their order. Orders returned without authorisation may not be credited.
If you wish to return, please contact us within 14 days of receiving your order to obtain authorisation.
Returns requested beyond this time will not be authorised.
Our team will provide full instructions on how to return your order and once received our returns department will process your refund.
Please note the cost to return any unwanted order to us is borne by the buyer.
Should your order arrive damaged, not as advertised or faulty, we must be advised of this within 14 days of delivery. Please contact us so we can find the best solution for you.

Hai il diritto di recedere dal presente contratto entro 14 giorni senza fornire alcuna motivazione.
Il periodo di recesso scade dopo 14 giorni dal giorno in cui tu o una terza parte, diversa dal vettore e da te indicata, acquisisce il possesso fisico dell'ultimo bene o dell'ultimo lotto o pezzo.
Per esercitare il diritto di recesso, compila e invia elettronicamente una dichiarazione esplicita sul nostro sito Web, alla voce “I miei acquisti” nella sezione “Mio account”. Ti comunicheremo senza indugio una conferma di ricezione di tale recesso su un supporto durevole (ad es. via e-mail).
Per rispettare il termine di recesso, è sufficiente inviare la comunicazione relativa all'esercizio del diritto di recesso prima della scadenza del periodo di recesso stesso.
Effetti del recesso
In caso di recesso dal presente contratto, ti rimborseremo tutti i pagamenti ricevuti, compresi i costi di spedizione (ad eccezione dei costi supplementari derivanti dalla tua eventuale scelta di un tipo di spedizione diverso dal tipo meno costoso di consegna standard da noi offerto).
Potremo effettuare una detrazione dal rimborso per la perdita di valore dei beni forniti, qualora tale perdita sia il risultato di una manipolazione non necessaria da parte tua.
Eseguiremo il rimborso senza indebito ritardo e non oltre 14 giorni dal giorno in cui saremo informati della tua decisione di recedere dal presente contratto.

Dovrai rispedire i beni o consegnarli a PBShop.store US, Springfield Gardens, New York, U.S.A., +44 1285 712917, senza indebito ritardo e, in ogni caso, entro 14 giorni dal giorno in cui ci hai comunicato la tua volontà di recedere dal presente contratto. Il termine è rispettato se rispedisci i beni prima della scadenza del periodo di 14 giorni. I costi diretti della restituzione dei beni saranno a tuo carico. Sei responsabile solo della diminuzione del valore dei beni risultante da una manipolazione diversa da quella necessaria per stabilire la natura, le caratteristiche e il funzionamento dei beni stessi.
Eccezioni al diritto di recesso
Il diritto di recesso non si applica a:
- La fornitura di giornali, periodici o riviste ad eccezione dei contratti di abbonamento; e
- La fornitura di contenuto digitale non fornito su un supporto materiale (ad es. su un CD o DVD), se al momento dell'invio dell'ordine hai accettato l'inizio dell'esecuzione e hai riconosciuto che non avresti potuto recedere una volta iniziata l'esecuzione.
