One benefit of using cases in mathematics education is that it's easier to stand back and look at someone else's teaching in an objective way. This in turn can open the door to learning how and being willing to analyze our own teaching with a critical eye. In this casebook, Carne Barnett-Clarke and Alma Ramirez of the Mathematics Case Methods Project provide opportunities for teachers to do just that: contribute to and learn from such practice-based materials for grades K-2. In addition, Barnett-Clarke, Ramirez, and colleagues address many of the topics considered the hardest to teach and learn, including place value, number sentences, basic facts, addition, subtraction, and regrouping.
The authors designed each case to promote analysis of four elements: mathematics, student thinking, instruction, and language - all considered interactively, just the way they occur in teaching practice. The specific goals of the cases are to help us to:
- deepen our understanding of the mathematics we teach
- experience the mathematics from our students' points of view to understand what is confusing and why
- examine various teaching strategies for their benefits and drawbacks
- understand how oral, symbolic, and written communications impact mathematics learning.

Informazioni sull’autore
Alma Ramirez is Codirector of the Mathematics Case Methods Project under the direction of Carne Barnett-Clarke. A former elementary and middle school teacher of bilingual students, Ramirez has authored cases and coauthored a mathematics book to help prepare preschoolers for mathematics in kindergarten and first grade.
Carne Barnett-Clarke is the Director of the Mathematics Case Methods Project at WestEd, a nonprofit educational institution in Oakland, California. A former teacher in Bay Area public schools and teacher educator at the University of California, Berkeley, she is one of the pioneers of using cases as a professional development tool in mathematics education. She coedited Mathematics Teaching Cases: Fractions, Decimals, Ratios & Percents (Heinemann, 1994), a counterpart to this volume for upper elementary and middle school teachers.

Per esercitare il diritto di recesso, compila e invia elettronicamente una dichiarazione esplicita sul nostro sito Web, alla voce “I miei acquisti” nella sezione “Mio account”. Ti comunicheremo senza indugio una conferma di ricezione di tale recesso su un supporto durevole (ad es. via e-mail).
Per rispettare il termine di recesso, è sufficiente inviare la comunicazione relativa all'esercizio del diritto di recesso prima della scadenza del periodo di recesso stesso.
Effetti del recesso
In caso di recesso dal presente contratto, ti rimborseremo tutti i pagamenti ricevuti, compresi i costi di spedizione (ad eccezione dei costi supplementari derivanti dalla tua eventuale scelta di un tipo di spedizione diverso dal tipo meno costoso di consegna standard da noi offerto).
Potremo effettuare una detrazione dal rimborso per la perdita di valore dei beni forniti, qualora tale perdita sia il risultato di una manipolazione non necessaria da parte tua.

Il termine è rispettato se rispedisci i beni prima della scadenza del periodo di 14 giorni. I costi diretti della restituzione dei beni saranno a tuo carico. Sei responsabile solo della diminuzione del valore dei beni risultante da una manipolazione diversa da quella necessaria per stabilire la natura, le caratteristiche e il funzionamento dei beni stessi.
Eccezioni al diritto di recesso
