Opera: Composers, Works, Performers; Andras Batta editor-in-chief, Sigrid Neef editor; Könemann, Cologne, 2000 for this English edition. Note the German edition was 1999. From the introduction This book is not just for opera fans. It is also especially designed for all those who know very little or even nothing about the world of opera. The operatic experience is like a culinary delight: it is the genre for gourmets. This book, Opera, will make this experience even more appetizing. This book contains several layers, like a musical score. First there are the pictures, more than 1,500 of them in colour and black and white. These include pictures of set designs from two centuries, a photographic collection from the University of Cologne, portraits of singers, old engravings, illustrations and more. The texts introduce readers to four centuries of composers and the works that best characterize them. The excerpts from musical scores can be regarded as graphic representations of the music s characteristics; the contain the most well-known themes and motifs, the hits of an opera. In this book, we have attempted to collect and combine the best of the established, international opera repertoire, a few of the rarities that have been forgotten in practice and a tribute to opera-making in the 20th century. Some 338 operas from 124 composers are presented here, to name only two important aspects of the selection process. The like accomplishments of the five musical dramatists who indisputably crown the history of opera Mozart, Puccini, Richard Strauss, Verdi, and Wagner are represented in their entirety. The individual portraits include bibliographical information, like events, an overview of the composer s works, as well as a brief characterization of the composer in an operatic, historical context. In the appendix, readers will find a glossary with definitions of the most important musical terms, a complete register with a list of operas, original performances, and musical scores. This large book, 925 pages measuring 296mm X 230mm, is in fine condition, in a near-fine dust jacket that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. The size of the volume, together with the use of high-quality paper, has resulted in a book that weighs over 3.5 kilos or 8 pounds and will require additional postage. But this is magnificent, cornerstone book on opera.
