The present volume treats of the first Twelve Chapters, a division suggested by the narrative and also followed by the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, whose syndicates select the first twelve chapters, and the remaining sixteen for the subjects of examination in alternate years.

As far as possible the Notes have been arranged in such a form as can be reproduced in examination by the student.
