Hardcover. "The Pagans of North Borneo" is an extensive and detailed ethnographic study focusing on the indigenous peoples inhabiting the northern territories of the island of Borneo. Authored by Owen Rutter, who drew upon his professional experiences in the region, the work offers a profound look into the social organization, spiritual beliefs, and daily lives of the various tribes, including the Dusun and Murut peoples. The text systematically examines the cultural landscape of the area, providing insights into traditional practices such as head-hunting, marriage rites, agricultural methods, and the complex systems of native law. Rutter also delves into the rich folklore and animistic traditions that governed the spiritual world of the pagan tribes, documenting a way of life that was undergoing significant change at the time of writing. Through careful observation and documentation, the book captures the intricacies of tribal governance and the unique aesthetic and domestic traditions of the Bornean interior. As a significant contribution to the field of anthropology and Southeast Asian studies, "The Pagans of North Borneo" remains a crucial resource for understanding the historical and cultural heritage of the region. It stands as a comprehensive record of the diverse identities and customs that define the indigenous history of the Malay Archipelago. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
