Paperback. Brighton and Baez are half-brothers forever linked by a miraculous moment on the frozen surface of Lake Aspetuck. In the heart of a deadly snowstorm, one brother plunges into darkness, and the other risks everything to pull him back to the light. That perilous episode echoes across their lives as they take vastly different paths through the chaos and complexity of the 21st century. Brighton Bethune becomes a global figure: a professional tennis champion, an Army Ranger haunted by war, and a celebrated film actor grappling with the cost of fame. Baez Honor, grounded by the spiritual teachings of their prophetic grandmother Nonnie, follows a quieter but no less meaningful path, exploring the mysterious gift of healing he discovered on that fateful day under the ice. As the brothers navigate ambition, trauma, love, and legacy, they find themselves confronting the moral decay of the modern world, including sports corruption, spiritual exploitation, media frenzy, and the silencing of truth. Yet through every storm, their enduring affection for each other remains a lifeline, and their exuberant embrace of this imperfect world guides their fate. Without Him is a sweeping and intimate novel about brotherhood, identity, healing, and the sacred ties that bind us across time, distance, and belief. Told over three decades, it is a story of two men shaped by one impossible moment and the lives they build in its aftermath. This item is printed on demand. From the acclaimed author of The Orphan from Shepherds Keep comes a new exploration of love's most enduring forms.
Brighton and Baéz are half-brothers forever bound by a single impossible moment: one plunges through the frozen surface of Lake Aspetuck, and the other risks everything to pull him back to the light. That miraculous rescue echoes across thirty years as the two men take vastly different paths through love, war, fame, and spiritual awakening.
Brighton Bethune becomes a global figure: tennis champion, Army Ranger, celebrated film actor, a man who conquers the world's stages while struggling to survive its cost. Baéz Honor, shaped by the spiritual wisdom of their prophetic grandmother Nonnie, follows a quieter path, tending to a mysterious gift of healing first awakened beneath that frozen lake. Together, they face sports corruption, the seductions of fame, the wounds of war, and the slow unraveling of a world they were raised to trust.
What holds them together is not obligation, but something fiercer: the same stubborn, imperfect devotion that readers fell in love with in The Orphan from Shepherds Keep. Lindsay once again finds the sacred in the bonds between men and proves that love, whether romantic or brotherly, is the one thing worth surviving for.
Without Him is sweeping and intimate, epic and deeply personal. It is a novel about what men owe each other, and what they cannot live without.
