People of Color: Casebook of Clinical Considerations guides clinicians, researchers, teachers/trainers, and consultants in the psychology profession on how to think about lived experiences and challenges of people experiencing the push and pull of intersectional identities. This book contains a different case vignette in each chapter with questions to stimulate thinking on client difficulties, as well as therapists’ self-reflexivity on their personal reactions to the case. Each chapter highlights a different manifestation of ecological determinants of mental health, such as race, ethnicity, and indigenousness, sex, gender, sexual identity, class, religion, immigrant standing, employment, and education, as these statuses are located at intrapersonal, interpersonal, microsystemic, exosystemic, and macrosystemic levels. The authors present their critical consciousness about the oppressive status quo and encourage readers to be critical in their learning and social action on behalf of their clients in the psychology and counseling professions. To develop further cultural knowledge, skills, and awareness, Appendix A provides experiential activities, and Appendix B provides case vignettes for discussion.
Acknowledgment: We thank Dr. Katherine Russell for guidance, feedback, and the book's cover.
"Brilliant Breakthrough!—People of Color Casebook is excellent, even profound. The systems conceptual theory underlying the book is superb and integrates much of social justice/multicultural thinking. This book will become a first choice or secondary book for all courses in counseling and therapy. It is also a “good read” that will change practice in our field. Do not miss this book." -Allen Ivey, EdD, Board Certified in Counseling Psychology, Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of University of Massachusetts, Amherst
