Permanent and Transitional Deacons in the African Episcopal Church
African Episcopal Church Vocational Development Series – Book #3

The ministry of the deacon is one of the Church’s oldest and most essential callings, reaching back to the appointment of the Seven in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 6:1–6) and continuing in the life of the Church today. In the African Episcopal Church, the diaconate is not a minor order or temporary stage, but a sacramental vocation that bridges the altar and the street, worship and mission, Word and service.

This third volume in the African Episcopal Church Vocational Development Series explores the vocation of both Permanent and Transitional Deacons, offering a comprehensive study of their liturgical duties, pastoral responsibilities, spiritual dispositions, and theological foundations. Drawing upon Holy Scripture (NRSVA), the historic Anglican tradition, and contemporary academic scholarship, it demonstrates how deacons embody Christ’s own words: “I am among you as one who serves” (Luke 22:27).

Readers will discover:

• The biblical and theological roots of diaconal ministry.

• The liturgical functions of deacons in Word and Sacrament.

• The differences and shared identity of Permanent and Transitional Deacons.

• The mindset of servant-leadership required for faithful ministry.

• The mission of the AEC as a servant Church with an Afro-Episcopal witness.

Designed for seminarians, clergy, vocational candidates, and laity, this volume provides both a teaching resource and a spiritual guide. It affirms that deacons are not simply assistants in worship, but living icons of Christ the Servant, reminding the whole Church that true worship leads to service, and true service flows from worship.

“The greatest among you will be your servant.” (Matthew 23:11, NRSVA)
